Relationships
care, acceptance, loyalty
I decide with the people I care about in mind.
Definition
The Relationships layer asks: what will this do to the people I care about? The motivation is love, loyalty, and care for particular people in the circle of the person deciding — not to let them down, not to hurt them. It is regard for the other person, not fitting yourself to the people around you: "I don't want to be left out" protects me from rejection, and it belongs to Survival.
Strengths
- It holds a world together: families, friendships, and teams rest on people who decide from this layer.
- It sees a particular person where other layers see a principle, a clause, or a line item.
- Empathy makes it the best adviser in conflicts and in fragile situations.
Limits
- The circle of care has an edge: whoever is "ours" gets everything — whoever is outside easily gets nothing.
- The fear of letting someone down can outvote the truth: people stay silent so as not to cause hurt.
- Your own needs are set aside for so long that the strength runs out.
Typical phrases
"I don't want to disappoint her."
"What would Mom say?"
"Anything for you."
Examples from areas of life
Partnership
I'll marry her, because it will make her happy — her happiness is a good enough reason for me.
Work
I'll admit the mistake, because otherwise it would land on my colleagues. I won't leave them to deal with it.
Parenting
Rules are not what I deal with first. The relationship is: above all, let my child trust me and come to me, even when they mess something up.
Business
I keep the supplier we started with, even though they cost more. Loyalty has a value for me.
Politics
I vote for whoever my family and my people vote for. I don't want to be left out.
Common mistakes
- "Relationships are a soft, immature motivation." They are not (see Carol Gilligan) — the ethics of care is a full moral language, not a lower stage.
- "Deciding because of people means letting yourself be controlled." The difference is whether you care out of love, or out of a fear of rejection — the second is closer to Survival.
- "A high Relationships score means dependence on other people." It rather means that people are your main measure. Strong and vulnerable at the same time.
